Please read about the Finite Difference Method as introduced by Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finite_volume_method

Read at least the beginning introducing paragraphs. Read other detailed contents up to a level comfortable to you. The coming video of the course will go over essential glimpses of mathematical theories you need to know for the practices of running NWP. Never mind if you find this reading material difficult to follow.

Please read also the MPAS Overview Slides (26 slides) from the MPAS Tutorial:

https://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/projects/mpas/tutorial/Boulder2019/slides/01.MPAS_overview.pdf

This is important, because CPAS is based on MPAS. The slides in the tutorial are comprehensive. You are expected to read to full understanding, or as far as you can make your best effort. CPAS uses a different mesh generation from the Lloyd’s method introduced in the tutorial.

For advanced learners, optionally, have a look at the MPAS Solver slides
